Petropolis is the closest mountain resort to Rio, and a favorite getaway destination with Cariocas. The Imperial Museum in Petropolis houses some of the most important objects in Brazilian history. Petropolis offers beautiful nature, a rich historic architecture and cooler weather.
The city is an hour’s drive from Rio along a scenic road through the Atlantic Rainforest. Petrópolis is often missed by international visitors. Named after Dom Pedro II, the second Emperor of Brazil, Petrópolis proudly displays its historical charm. The original cobblestone streets still wind through the city center, lined by colonial-era mansions and the iconic Cathedral of Saint Peter. which dates back to 1884.
Also we find a little museum in the house of Alberto Santos Dumont, the Brazilian father of aviation and the first man to design and fly a plane completely solo. The highlight of the tour is the Imperial Museum, which is build more than 150 years ago. Petrópolis is a refreshing and quiet retreat from the heat and the busy and chaotic rhythm of Rio de Janeiro.
